6 Pool Safety Tips for Summertime Fun

The first step to achieving a summertime experience of epic proportions is to ensure everyone is safe and responsible.

The second the dismissal bell rings and schools across Atlanta release for the Summer, children dash home, throw down their backpacks, and quickly prepare for their favorite summertime activities. Sunscreen is applied in copious amounts, coolers are filled with ice and revitalizing beverages, and beach towels creep forth from the linen closets in which they have been hibernating. Children wear bathing suits as if they are a uniform and tiny wet footprints and joyful squeals are sure signs that Summer break has finally arrived. This is one of my favorite times of the year, with Little Monkey starting swimming lessons in June, I'm thrilled to share with you some pool safety tips!

Summer and pools are almost synonymous with one another because a pool is an exciting and joyful gathering place offering amusement and refreshment during hot summer days. Most people, especially children, feel a calling to the bright blue waters during the unrelenting, sun-scorched Atlanta summer days, but when you take a dip in the pool, do so safely and responsibly. To thoroughly appreciate your time swimming, here are six tips for poolside safety:

  1. Never leave children unattended. This may seem obvious, but little ones should never be left alone in or near a body of water. Adults need to not only be present but also be actively watching the kids as they gallivant through the vicinity. Never turn your back on children in the water and make sure there is enough adult supervision for the number of swimmers present. For example, one adult should not be supervising ten swimming youngsters.
  2. Teach children to swim. Swimming is a valuable life lesson and kids and adults of any age benefit from learning the essentials. Swimmers are more comfortable in the water and they are less likely to have issues with pool safety.

When kids learn to swim they gain a valuable life lesson that they can carry with them for a lifetime.

  1. Apply sunscreen. No one wants to end their time outdoors early because of sunburn or sun poisoning. Use a sunscreen with broad spectrum SPF (15+) every two to two and a half hours to block out the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays.
  2. Keep horseplay to a minimum. Having fun is a summertime essential, but playing too rough can result in catastrophic injuries. Adults should diligently monitor the activity level and keep roughhousing to a minimum. Add beach balls, basketball hoops, and swim toys to the pool for additional entertainment but always read the package instructions to make sure all items are used correctly.
  3. Stay Hydrated. Even though you are submerged while you swim, you still need to maintain a healthy level of hydration. Keep water nearby and make sure you are drinking eight glasses each day.
  4. Know what to do in case of an emergency. Have a plan in case of an emergency and phone numbers handy in case things do not go as expected. Another good idea is to get CPR certification each year or download an application on your phone to guide you through the steps of CPR should the need arise.

Once you understand the basics of pool safety, it will afford you the opportunity to relax because you are prepared in case of an emergency. Another way to make your time in a pool even more enjoyable is if you set up a pool in your backyard. Consider installing an above ground pool in your yard, and your home will quickly become the gathering place for family, friends, and neighbors.
